As the founder of the Hotze Health & Wellness Center, I have been working to help my patients achieve optimal health without drugs since 1989. The process of understanding the important role that supplements play in our health has been an educational journey. Given the limited amount of teaching in medical school on the topic of vitamins and nutrients, I have to thank my father, Ernest Hotze, for putting me on the right path. In 1988, at the age of 73, my father underwent major heart surgery for coronary artery disease. During the surgery an artery ruptured and he lost 80 percent of his heart function as a result. Two weeks later, he read a health newsletter that reported the benefits of nutritional supplements for coronary artery disease, and turned to me with the question, "What do you recommend?" At the time, I had to answer, "What in the world do I know about vitamins? I'm a doctor." He asked me to find out about vitamins, and so I did.
As I delved into the research on vitamins, minerals, and other nutrients, I found that the typical American diet consists of packaged and processed foods. These foods are high in carbohydrates and fats, but provide little nutritional benefit as the nutrients have been destroyed in the process. In addition, those of us who make an effort to consume fresh produce are not reaping the same nutritional benefits as our ancestors. The reason? Modern agriculture methods deplete the soil of minerals, which translates to nutrient-depleted produce. In addition, stress of any type, including injury, infection, allergies, inflammation, and physical or emotional stress, depletes your body's storage of nutrients. In order to achieve your body's maximum potential, vitamin and mineral supplementation is a necessity.
