INSURANCE
Q: Do you accept insurance?
A: We do not accept assignment from insurance companies. Our policy regarding insurance has always been that we choose to work directly with and for our patients, rather than indirectly through an insurance company. Therefore, we have never joined any HMOs, PPOs, Medicaid or other types of managed care. Because we do not work with insurance companies, we do not stay versed on their coding requirements and therefore do not use such coding. Because of this, it is not likely that insurance companies will process our claims. Additionally, because we seek to prevent disease and promote wellness, many of our medical services would be uncovered.
Our doctors have voluntarily opted out of the Medicare Program. As a result, our doctors can see Medicare patients, but only if they first elect to pay in full for all services rendered and sign a Medicare "Waiver" in which they agree not to file claims with Medicare to seek reimbursement for the medical care they receive at the Hotze Health & Wellness Center.
Q: What are your views on insurance that affect this decision?
A: We typically view insurance as something to cover major losses such as home or auto. Ultimately, the person who writes the checks is the decision-maker in a process. Today insurance company and managed care guidelines are dictating the decisions most doctors are making. Today doctors no longer have a doctor-patient relationship but rather a doctor-insurer-patient relationship and the major factor in this relationship is what is covered rather than what is best for you. Do we really want our insurance company in charge of our health? Do you really want a person sitting behind a desk at an insurance company, who knows nothing about you, and often without any medical background, deciding what medical treatment you can receive?
