What happens to your gut after a serious infection, multiple rounds of antibiotics, and major surgery? In this episode, Bryana Burken, Pharmacist and Physician Liaison with Physicians Preference Pharmacy, is joined by Elaina Mango, Vice President of the Hotze Health & Wellness Center, to share Elaina’s recent health journey and the steps she took to restore her gut health. What began as sudden, severe abdominal pain during a vacation in Curaçao was eventually diagnosed as a ruptured appendix that had gone untreated for six days, leading to a serious infection, repeated hospitalizations, extensive antibiotic treatment, and ultimately emergency surgery.
After returning home, Elaina explains that removing the appendix and treating the infection were only the beginning of her recovery. She worked with her healthcare team to address the effects of multiple rounds of antibiotics. Her treatment plan included nitazoxanide, which Elaina describes as the turning point that helped her feel dramatically better within just a few days.
Bryana and Elaina discuss why restoring the gut can require a multifaceted and individualized approach, particularly after intensive antibiotic treatment. Elaina’s experience highlights the importance of listening to your body, working closely with your healthcare providers, and taking an active role in rebuilding your health after a serious illness.
