7 Ways to Increase Sex Drive After a Hysterectomy

July 22, 2025

Sad woman, with low libido post hysterectomy, sitting on the bed with her husband in the background.

Do questions about low sex drive after your hysterectomy puzzle you? Many women feel dismissed by conventional doctors, enduring unnecessary symptoms because test results report everything is “normal.” At Hotze Health & Wellness Center, we understand this frustration deeply and believe that if you are having symptoms, they are real. Our guests (we call our patients guests) often arrive feeling sick and tired of temporary fixes and pharmaceutical masking. Here, we take a different path. First, we LISTEN. We partner with you, knowing from our 35 years of experience treating hormonal imbalances in women, men, and teens that masking symptoms is not enough. We partner with you to develop a treatment plan to address the root cause of your symptoms. Our goal is to restore optimal health, vitality, and intimacy. First, let me help you understand what occurs after a hysterectomy and then share a real story of one of our guests.  Next, I will share seven natural strategies to boost your sex drive after a hysterectomy.

Understanding the Impact of a Hysterectomy

A hysterectomy profoundly reshapes your body by removing the uterus, and often, the ovaries. This surgery dramatically shifts hormone levels, causing estrogen and testosterone levels to plummet overnight. Testosterone, crucial for sexual desire in women, peaks naturally during ovulation. Without ovaries, these peaks vanish, bringing early menopause symptoms like hot flashes, fatigue, mood swings, and low libido. While most people believe that testosterone replenishment is just for men, this could not be farther from the truth. Women require testosterone replenishment as they age, but even more so after a hysterectomy.

Barbara’s Story: Renewed Vitality Post-Hysterectomy

Barbara underwent a total hysterectomy at 42. Traditional hormone therapy (often with what we call “counterfeit” hormones, which are made of chemicals, not the bioidentical form) followed, but the next ten years were marked by persistent decline—mood swings, hot flashes, insomnia, weight gain, migraines, and a total absence of sexual desire. Her life transformed when she visited Hotze Health & Wellness Center. Bioidentical Hormone Replacement Therapy (BHRT) balanced her system naturally. She shed 40 pounds, migraines ceased, mood stabilized, energy surged, and intimacy joyfully returned. Stories like Barbara’s continually inspire us.

7 Natural Strategies to Increase Sex Drive After Hysterectomy

1. Balance Hormones with BHRT

Bioidentical hormones (BHRT) mirror your body’s natural hormones, unlike synthetic (or what I call “counterfeit”) counterparts. Research consistently demonstrates their effectiveness in enhancing libido, improving mood, and boosting overall well-being¹²³. Our tailored approach, obtained by both your clinical symptoms and comprehensive bloodwork, assesses your unique hormonal profile, providing targeted support for our team of medical professional to partner with you to resolve deficiencies safely.

2. Adopt a Nutrient-Rich Eating Lifestyle

Proper nutrition supports hormonal balance. Incorporate zinc-rich foods such as nuts and oysters, magnesium-rich leafy greens, and vitamin B6 from lean proteins. Omega-3 fatty acids from fish and flaxseeds reduce inflammation and enhance blood flow, supporting sexual health⁴. Avoid processed sugars, as insulin spikes disrupt hormones. As a guest, your provider will provide expert guidance to help you build daily routines for sustained vitality.

3. Engage in Regular Exercise

Physical activity boosts natural hormone production and mood. Cardiovascular exercises like walking improve circulation, strength training increases testosterone, and yoga reduces stress levels that suppress libido⁵. Regular practice enhances confidence, improves mood, and restores energy.

4. Supplement with Essential Vitamins and Minerals

Targeted vitamin and mineral supplementation addresses specific nutritional deficiencies hindering hormone balance. Magnesium calms the nervous system, vitamin D supports testosterone production, and B vitamins energize cells, strengthening the immune system. Additional natural supplements include:

  • Maca Root: May enhance libido and hormone balance⁶.
  • Ashwagandha: Reduces cortisol and improves overall hormone regulation.
  • L-Arginine: Boosts blood flow and may enhance sexual responsiveness.

5. Prioritize Quality Sleep and Stress Management

Aim for 7–9 hours of restful sleep each night to maintain hormonal balance. Managing stress through meditation, deep breathing, or engaging hobbies helps lower cortisol levels, freeing testosterone and boosting libido⁷. Reducing alcohol consumption and quitting smoking further enhance circulation and overall health.

6. Foster Open Communication and Emotional Connection

Emotional closeness can significantly reignite physical desire. Share your thoughts, needs, and concerns openly with your partner—intimacy grows from honesty and connection. Schedule time for affection, explore new ways of bonding, and don’t shy away from lubricants that can ease discomfort. When communication feels difficult, couples may decide to seek counseling, which can help restore trust and deepen connection—both essential for a satisfying, long-term sexual relationship⁸.

Low libido and decreased intimacy in a relationship can cause problems. If the above recommendations are not working, it is not a “lost cause.” You should absolutely consider Bioidentical Hormone Replacement Therapy (BHRT). It works! Often, spouses of our guests (both women and men) accompany our guests on their follow-up visits to “thank us” for giving them their wife (or husband) back! While we are always grateful, it is YOU who decides to take charge of your health and well-being.

At Hotze Health & Wellness Center, we consider ourselves ministers of health. We have been assisting women get back on track after surgical procedures such as childbirth (postpartum depression), tubal ligation, and hysterectomy for over 35 years. Too often, women have no idea that many of the symptoms they experience after these procedures are, simply put, unnecessary. This is why it is my goal to educate that hormone replenishment can be the answer. The symptoms are real, they are not “all in your head” and in most cases they can be reversed with bioidentical hormone replacement.

7. Track Your Progress and Adjust as Needed

Document your symptoms and improvements in a journal. Regularly reviewing your progress allows you to refine your approach effectively. Combining these strategies consistently yields the best results, providing noticeable improvement over weeks and months.
