The Teen Anxiety Crisis: Root Causes and Natural Solutions

August 4, 2025

Today’s teens are in crisis. Anxiety, once a background concern, now dominates the emotional landscape of adolescents. Schools, social media, sleep loss, and an exorbitant amount of processed foods in our Standard American Diet are just part of the pressure cooker. But we believe there’s more to the story than just academic pressure or screen time. Often, there’s a deeper, biological reason—one that conventional doctors tend to overlook. It’s not just in their heads, it’s in their bodies.

Do you have a teenager who’s struggling with stress, anxiety, lack of focus, constant fatigue, or low energy? Are they falling behind in school or feeling discouraged because they can’t keep up? These are supposed to be some of the most energetic and optimistic years of their lives, but more and more teens are running on empty. Is your conventional doctor recommending anti-depressants, ADHD medication, and a plethora of pharmaceutical drugs, which, by the way, only mask symptoms and do not get to the root cause?

Many parents are shocked to learn that teens can—and often do—experience hormone imbalances, including adrenal fatigue, hypothyroidism, and low or erratic levels of their sex hormones. These imbalances can leave your teen feeling foggy, fatigued, moody, low energy, and out of control, through no fault of their own.

Understanding the Hormone–Anxiety Connection

Your teen’s body is undergoing massive hormonal shifts. When stress—emotional, academic, physical, or spiritual—is layered on top of this, the endocrine system can falter. Chronic stress places a heavy burden on the adrenal glands. And when the adrenals become overworked, they may begin pulling from other hormone pathways—such as progesterone, DHEA, or even thyroid hormone—to keep up with demand.

This hormonal “borrowing” can deplete essential building blocks and lead to widespread imbalance. Instead of a stable mood and energy, teens may feel anxious, exhausted, foggy, and irritable.

These imbalances are often missed or dismissed in conventional care. That’s where we come in.

Why Teens Today Are Burning Out Faster

Adolescents face more environmental, technological, emotional, and physiological stress than any generation before. Consider this:

  • Social media introduces a 24/7 stream of comparison and pressure.
  • Academic demands have intensified, with college prep starting in middle school.
  • Trauma, including bullying or high-pressure environments, adds emotional strain.
  • Processed foods, seed oils, and sugar spikes can disrupt hormonal rhythms.
  • Most teens are sleep-deprived, reducing their ability to regulate hormones.
  • Constant digital stimulation prevents the nervous system from truly resting.

Over time, the body struggles to maintain balance—and symptoms begin to show.

Could It Be More Than Just Stress?

If your teens are struggling with anxiety, exhaustion, or poor focus, it may be more than just everyday stress. In many cases, hormone imbalances—like adrenal fatigue, hypothyroidism, or imbalanced sex hormones—are quietly at play. These issues are often missed by conventional labs and overlooked by most doctors.

At Hotze Health & Wellness Center, we’ve specialized in uncovering and addressing these hidden causes for decades and I am saddened by the number of parents and grandparents who are unaware that there is a more natural path to helping their children or grandchildren feel better. It’s not your fault.  Conventional providers are not trained to look at hormone imbalances.  As a fully trained M.D. in conventional medicine, I can assure you that I was never trained in alternative solutions in medical school. I had to seek the education on my own, walking away from my conventional medical practice 35 years ago to begin my alternative medical practice promoting natural, alternative solutions ever since. When adrenal, thyroid, or reproductive hormones are out of balance, teens can experience a wide range of symptoms that disrupt their mood, energy, and motivation.

Common Symptoms of Adrenal Fatigue in Teens:

  • Constant fatigue, even after sleep
  • Difficulty getting out of bed in the morning
  • Mood swings, anxiety, or panic attacks
  • Dizziness when standing up quickly
  • Cravings for salt or sugar
  • Difficulty recovering from stress or illness
  • Low blood pressure or heart palpitations
  • Poor stress tolerance or panic attacks

Signs of Hypothyroidism in Teens:

  • Cold hands and feet
  • Difficulty concentrating or “brain fog”
  • Fatigue and sluggishness
  • Constipation
  • Dry skin or hair loss
  • Weight gain despite normal eating
  • Depression or low mood
  • Irregular menstrual cycles in girls
  • Puffy face or swelling

Symptoms of Hormone Imbalance:

  • Irritability or mood swings
  • Difficulty sleeping or staying asleep
  • Low motivation or lack of confidence
  • Headaches or joint aches
  • Skin issues (like acne or dryness)
  • Poor immune function and frequent illness
  • Trouble maintaining a healthy weight
  • Changes in appetite or digestion

Do some of the above symptoms sound familiar in your teens? We often see teens who’ve had bloodwork labeled “normal,” but they’re anything but. At Hotze Health & Wellness Center, we do not simply rely on bloodwork. We LISTEN to clinical symptoms as well.  If bloodwork is normal but your teen still feels miserable, then we need to get to the root cause of “why?”. We help balance hormones the natural way—without relying on medications to mask the symptoms.

How to Support Healthy Hormones in Teens

At Hotze Health & Wellness Center, we take a natural, individualized approach to help restore hormone balance in teens. We use bioidentical—not chemical or synthetic—hormones, and our protocols are grounded in foundational steps that support the body’s ability to thrive. While every teen is unique, here are several strategies we consider:

1. Prioritize Consistent, Restorative Sleep

Sleep is essential for hormone regulation. Lack of quality sleep affects the entire endocrine system, from melatonin to cortisol and beyond.

Tips for better sleep:

  • Limit screens 1 hour before bed
  • Maintain a consistent sleep and wake time
  • Use blackout curtains or a sleep mask
  • Encourage wind-down routines, like magnesium baths or journaling

2. Balance Blood Sugar

Hormones are deeply connected to blood sugar. Skipping meals or eating excessive sugar leads to glucose crashes, which dysregulate insulin and stress hormones.

Support stable blood sugar with:

  • Protein at every meal
  • Healthy fats like avocado, nuts, and olive oil
  • Limiting sugary snacks and caffeine
  • Limit processed foods

3. Supplement Adrenal and Hormone Support Nutrients

Certain vitamins and herbs nourish adrenal function and hormone production. These include:

  • Vitamin C – concentrated in adrenal tissue and used up quickly under stress¹
  • B Vitamins – especially B5 and B6, which support adrenal enzyme function²
  • Magnesium – promotes relaxation and reduces HPA axis hyperactivity³
  • Vitamin D3 with K2 – supports mood, immune function, and hormonal balance, especially when teens have limited sun exposure

4. Reduce Inflammatory Foods

Inflammation worsens hormonal imbalances. Unfortunately, the modern teen diet is loaded with inflammatory triggers:

  • Refined sugar and carbohydrates
  • Seed oils (like vegetable, canola, soybean, corn)
  • Artificial dyes and preservatives
  • Gluten and dairy (which some teens react to)

Encourage a whole-food, anti-inflammatory diet with lean proteins, leafy greens, berries, nuts, and seeds.

5. Encourage Restorative Movement and Stress Relief Techniques

Movement helps regulate hormones and release tension—but it has to feel approachable. For many teens, formal exercise isn’t appealing. That’s okay. What matters most is helping them find enjoyable ways to move and unwind.

Here are some simple ways teens can reduce stress and feel more grounded:

  • Take a short walk with music or a podcast
  • Kick a ball around or shoot hoops in the driveway
  • Try a few yoga stretches on YouTube
  • Stand barefoot in the grass (grounding)
  • Sit outside in the morning sunlight (helps reset their internal clock)
  • Use a Truvaga device to stimulate the vagus nerve. Click HERE to learn more about Truvaga.
  • Try box breathing: breathe in 4 counts, hold 4, out 4, hold 4 (repeat for 1–2 minutes)
  • Keep a short gratitude journal or brain-dump thoughts before bed

These techniques aren’t meant to feel like chores—they’re tools to help teens regain a sense of control and calm in a stressful world.

6. Rethink Conventional Approaches to Hormone Support

Many teens—especially young women—are prescribed birth control pills to regulate irregular cycles, acne, or mood swings. But synthetic (what we call counterfeit) hormones do not address the underlying cause. Birth control pills deliver a fixed combination of synthetic hormones, which can make a teen dominant in one hormone and deficient in another. This can cause a host of side effects and/or other symptoms.

At Hotze Health & Wellness Center, we never use birth control pills to manage hormone symptoms. Instead, we test hormone levels, listen carefully to your clinical symptoms, and prescribe precise dosages of bioidentical hormones—compounded to meet the individual needs of each teen. With our compounded bioidentical hormones, we can start slow and increase dosages to tailor specific needs.

7. Test, Don’t Guess

If your teen is struggling, we recommend comprehensive hormone testing, including thyroid panels and sex hormones.

With accurate insights, we create a personalized wellness plan that supports your teens’ unique biochemistry and helps restore their confidence, energy, and emotional resilience.
