Boost Your Summer Energy: How Thyroid Health Enhances Vitality

June 3, 2025

Happy woman on a pier overlooking the ocean.

Summer is a time to soak up sunshine, savor long evenings, and dive into outdoor fun. But if you’re dragging through the day, battling brain fog, or struggling with extra pounds, it’s hard to feel that spark. For 35 years at Hotze Health & Wellness Center, I’ve seen how hypothyroidism can rob you of your energy and zest for life, often because your cells aren’t getting enough active thyroid hormone to produce the energy needed for a vibrant metabolism.1 Your thyroid—that small, butterfly-shaped gland in your neck—is your body’s powerhouse, driving metabolism and fueling vitality. Let me share how supporting your thyroid can help you reclaim your summer glow.

Why Your Thyroid Is Your Energy Spark Plug

Your thyroid produces hormones, mainly thyroxine (T4) and triiodothyronine (T3), that act like spark plugs for your cells’ power plants, the mitochondria.1 These hormones touch every cell, driving your heart rate, muscle strength, digestion, and ability to stay cool in the summer heat. When your thyroid’s running smoothly, you feel vibrant, focused, and ready to seize the day. But if it’s sluggish, your cells don’t get enough active T3, leaving you tired, foggy, and slow.1

Picture yourself at a summer picnic, feeling too drained or uncomfortably warm to join in the conversation.1 By giving your thyroid the right support, you can fire up your energy and dive into summer with enthusiasm.

What’s Slowing Your Thyroid Down?

Hypothyroidism, or low thyroid function, is a hidden culprit behind low energy, affecting millions who don’t realize their symptoms point to this issue.1 It happens when your thyroid doesn’t produce enough hormones. Less often, hyperthyroidism, an overactive thyroid, can make you feel wired or restless.1

Here are the telltale signs that your thyroid might be struggling:

  • Fatigue: You’re worn out, even after a full night’s sleep.1
  • Weight Gain: Pounds pile on despite eating right (hypothyroidism).1
  • Weight Loss: You’re tired, dropping weight without trying (hyperthyroidism).1
  • Temperature Sensitivity: You feel unusually uncomfortable in Texas’ Texas’ heat or overly chilly indoors.1
  • Mood Swings: You’re down, irritable, or anxious.1
  • Brain Fog: Thinking clearly or remembering things is tough.1
  • Muscle and Joint Aches: You feel stiff or sore.1
  • Digestive Issues: Constipation (hypothyroidism) or loose stools (hyperthyroidism).1
  • Heart Rate Changes: Your heart feels slow or races.1
  • Skin and Hair Problems: Dry skin, thinning hair, or brittle nails.2
  • Sleep Issues: You’re restless at night or overly sleepy.3
  • Enlarged Tongue: Your tongue looks scalloped or large.1
  • Chronic Headaches: Persistent headaches that won’t quit.1
  • Frequent Infections: You catch every bug going around.1

What causes these issues? Nutrient deficiencies, like low iodine or selenium, starve your thyroid of what it needs to make hormones.4 Chronic stress spikes cortisol, which slams the brakes on thyroid function.1 Toxins, like BPA in plastics or pesticides, can also disrupt hormone balance.5 Autoimmune thyroiditis, where your immune system attacks your thyroid, is another culprit, often triggered by leaky gut or genetics.1 Aging, hormonal shifts, or medications can also throw your thyroid off.1 If your doctor has told you your thyroid numbers are “in range” but you’re still experiencing these symptoms, it may be time to seek a second opinion, as standard tests often miss underlying issues that affect how you feel.1 If these symptoms hit home, it’s time to dig deeper.

How to Fire Up Your Thyroid

In my 35 years of practice, I’ve learned that natural, intentional steps can transform your thyroid health. Forget relying solely on blood tests like TSH—they only tell part of the story and miss 95% of cases because “normal” ranges are too broad.1 Instead, we focus on your symptoms and use natural approaches to get you feeling vibrant. Here’s how to start.

1. Feed Your Thyroid Well

Your thyroid craves the right nutrients.1 Iodine, found in seaweed, fish, and dairy, is the backbone of thyroid hormones.6 Selenium, in Brazil nuts, eggs, and sunflower seeds, supports thyroid function.7 Zinc, from pumpkin seeds or beef, keeps your thyroid strong.2

Eat plenty of colorful fruits and veggies, like berries and greens, for antioxidants that protect your thyroid. Blueberries, for instance, deliver vitamin C to fight inflammation and boost immunity. Go light on raw cruciferous veggies like broccoli or kale—they can block iodine if overdone.8 Cooking them neutralizes this effect, so enjoy them steamed or roasted.

2. Stay Hydrated

Water keeps your thyroid humming. Dehydration stresses your body and disrupts hormone production.1 In summer’s heat, aim for at least eight 8-ounce glasses of water daily, more if you’re active. Add a slice of lemon or cucumber for flavor, or sip herbal teas to keep hydration fun.

3. Tame Stress

Stress is a thyroid killer, pumping out cortisol that slows hormone production.1 Try deep breathing, meditation, or yoga to find calm. Just 10 minutes of meditation daily can lower cortisol. A walk outdoors not only eases stress but also gives you a dose of vitamin D, which supports your thyroid and immune system.9

4. Get Good Sleep

Sleep is your thyroid’s reset button. Poor sleep throws off the balance of thyroid hormones.3 Shoot for 7–9 hours of restful sleep nightly. Stick to a bedtime routine, avoid screens before bed, and keep your bedroom cool and dark—perfect for those warm summer nights.

5. Move Smart

Moderate exercise revs up your metabolism and supports your thyroid.1 Brisk walking, swimming, or cycling boosts energy and circulation. A 30-minute swim is a great way to stay cool and feel alive. But don’t overdo it—intense workouts can stress your thyroid.10 Choose activities that leave you energized, not wiped out.

6. Avoid Toxins

Toxins like BPA in plastics or pesticides can disrupt your thyroid.5 Use glass or stainless steel water bottles, opt for organic produce when possible, and skip heating food in plastic. Natural cleaning products help cut down on chemical exposure at home. Consider using fluoride-free toothpaste and investing in a good quality water filter like Berkey.

Why Thyroid Health Matters

When you nurture your thyroid, the rewards are transformative. You’ll have the energy to hike, garden, or chase kids at the beach without crashing. Your mind will stay sharp, so you can shine at work or enjoy lively chats with friends. You’ll handle summer heat like a pro, thanks to better temperature control. And you’ll feel upbeat, with a zest for life that makes every day brighter.11

When to Get Help

If you’re dealing with symptoms like fatigue, weight gain, or feeling off, don’t brush it off.  Your doctor might say your thyroid levels are fine, but if you’re still struggling, a second opinion can uncover issues standard tests miss. Synthetic thyroid drugs like Synthroid often fail because they’re just T4, which your body may not convert to active T3.1 I’ve had thousands of patients come to us still struggling on these meds. That’s why we use natural, bioidentical thyroid with both T4 and T3 to get results.1 If you’re ready to feel like yourself again, click HERE or call us at (281) 698-8698 to schedule a complimentary phone consultation.
