Due to the nationwide shortage of desiccated thyroid, such as Armour thyroid, many thyroid patients are having difficulty finding pharmacies that are able to fill their desiccated thyroid prescription. Due to nation-wide thyroid shortage, Hotze Pharmacy began compounding Hotze Thyroid in order to meet its patients’ needs. Hotze Thyroid contains the same active ingredient as commercially available brands, without all of the inactive ingredients or fillers other brands add, such as sodium starch glycolate. Both Armour and Nature-Throid use sodium starch glycolate as a disintegrating agent, which is usually derived from potato, but can also be derived from corn, wheat or rice. This can be a real problem for those with gluten sensitivity.
Compounded Hotze Thyroid is hypo-allergenic in that it does not contain potato, wheat, corn or rice. And as the presence of wheat by-products is of particular concern for those with celiac disease, Hotze Thyroid is appropriate for celiacs because it is gluten-free.
