Have you decided on your New Year’s resolutions yet? Dr. Hotze shares with you how you can use goals and resolutions to achieve everything that you want to achieve this year in health and in all areas of your life. It’s a New Year for a New You!
Stacey Bandfield: Happy new year! Welcome to Dr. Hotze’s Wellness Revolution. I’m Stacey Bandfield, here with Dr. Steven Hotze. It’s a new year, new you and Dr. Hotze is going to share with you today how you can use goals and resolutions so you can achieve everything that you want to achieve this year in health and in all areas of your life. Dr. Hotze.
Dr. Hotze: Thanks so much, Stacey. I believe that you and everybody needs a doctor and a staff of professionals who can coach you on a path of health and wellness, naturally. Why? So that as you mature, you feel full of energy! You have vim and vigor, you have get-up-and-go, you have enthusiasm for life and you don’t have to use a bunch of pharmaceutical drugs. When you feel well, you’re going to be more productive. We just entered the new year and I know that you, like most individuals, have some ideas of what you’d like to achieve and accomplish this year.
Here’s what I’d recommend. Let me just recommend how you can make this coming year more successful than you had been in the previous year. Let’s talk about that. I’d set aside a time during one evening or on a Saturday – some time, a couple of hours, three hours. Sit down and review everything that happened last year. Go back. What are you proud about doing? What did you accomplish? What did you achieve? What makes you happy about something that was accomplished last year?
That’ll help stimulate you, instead of looking at things you didn’t accomplish, look at the things you did accomplish. If you made a goal list last year, review it. What are you still short on? What would you like to accomplish for the coming year? Then look ahead in the coming year and say what, besides bringing over some of the goals that I had in the previous year that you may not have achieved, besides bringing those over, are there any new goals that you want to set for the new year?
Here is the best way to be effective in having a productive and a very fulfilling new year here in this coming year. Here’s the way to do it. You want to write out goals, worthy goals, that you believe would make you a better person either physically, mentally, spiritually, in your financial life, in your family life, in your church life, with your friends, in your business life. Write down those different areas of life and write down what goals you would like to achieve in those areas.
Once you write out your goal, the next thing you do, the next step in goal setting, and remember, writing them out is critical and important. If you don’t write them out, a goal’s just a wish. Writing out a goal makes it a target. It’s a purpose. There’s something that happens when you put your hands on a pencil and put it on paper. There’s some way it embeds it in your mind better than just saying, “Well, I’d like to do this or I’d like to do that.”
Stacey Bandfield: Makes it more real.
Dr. Hotze: Right. That’s why I like to say goals that are unwritten are wishes, they’re not goals. Write out your goal, then write out the benefits of those goals. What would happen if I accomplish this? What are the benefits to me and to my family, to my friends? To my coworkers? The businesses I work in? How would things improve if this is achieved? Then you have to look at, who do I know that could help me? You need a mentor oftentimes in life.
Who do I know that’d help me achieve this goal? You want to set up a time to meet with those individuals. Also, you want to ask yourself, what do I need to know? What do I need to read? What on the internet, what kind of book do I need to buy? What kind of program do I need to see? Is there some video that could help me? How can I help myself? What do I need to know? You start acquiring the material to learn everything you can about achieving your goal.
Then you write down the obstacles. What obstacles are you going to face? You have a block in the road, you have to figure out a way to go over that blockage or around it somehow or another. Think about what would keep you from achieving the goal. Then finally, once you’ve done that, then write out the plan specifically – the steps that it’s going to take. Start with the end in mind, then work backward. What are the steps that you’re going to have to have to accomplish to achieve this goal?
Once you’ve got that written out now, the next step is you have to take immediate action. What does that mean? Well, pick up a phone and call somebody. Who you need to know? Order a book online. Contact somebody. Make an effort to move towards that goal immediately. Now, that action creates energy. What does energy do? It gives you the momentum now to achieve that goal.
Once you start moving towards that goal yourself, you’ll find the goal will begin to move towards you in the strangest of places. Somebody may send you a book. You may run into somebody you hadn’t seen in a long time and then want to talk about exactly what your goal is. I’ve had it where I’ve written out goals. I sit down on an airplane and the next thing I know, the person I’m sitting to is talking about exactly what I wrote my goal about.
Stacey Bandfield: That’s incredible.
Dr. Hotze: It just happens that the goal begins to move toward you as you move towards that goal. Always put down a deadline. The key steps are, write out a worthy goal, write out the benefits, write out who you need to know. Write out what you need to know, write out what the obstacles are, write out the plan specific, and put a deadline on it. Be sure to look at that goal and read that goal every day. Always make sure your tasks, during the day, move you a step closer towards that goal.
If you do that this year, you’ll find, and by the way, here’s another thing that’s really important is, have somebody you work with, maybe your spouse, maybe a friend at the office or close friend of yours, share with them your goals. Ask them to help hold you accountable. I think it’s really good to have a mentor, an older individual that, or a friend that’s achieved success and that you can work with. By the way, this is the way you have success.
Success isn’t just reaching your goal. Success is the progressive realization of your goal. You have to get yourself on the path of success. Then once you’re on that path, you want to work towards that goal. You’re successful as you’re making progress, as you’re progressively realizing a movement towards your goal. That’s what makes you a successful person, is the progressive realization of a worthy goal.
I hope that helps you this year. Write these steps down. I didn’t learn all these myself. These go back to Zig Ziglar. He was a great mentor of mine. I read his books, never had a chance to meet him personally, but I listened to his books and listened to his tapes. There are a lot of good tapes on goal setting and on self-improvement that you can listen to, and I highly recommend you doing that online.
Stacey Bandfield: You can write that down as a goal.
Dr. Hotze: Yes.
Stacey Bandfield: Well, doctor, those are wise words. Question for you. I know sometimes when people write down a goal, and by the way I love the fact you say, “Look at your goals every day,” because what I used to do is I would make my New Year’s resolutions every January. Then I wouldn’t look at them again the whole year.
Dr. Hotze: …’til the next January.
Stacey Bandfield: ‘til the next January, but there is something very powerful about keeping that top-of-mind and looking at your goals daily. I think that is awesome. Then, also, some people like to write out their goals as if they’ve already happened.
Dr. Hotze: Right.
Stacey Bandfield: Do you do that, or do you write them more like you’re going to or I’ve done it?
Dr. Hotze: I have done it both ways. More recently I’m writing it down as if it’s already occurred.
Stacey Bandfield: Occurred. That’s a powerful technique, as well. Again, wise words, I know, and Dr. Hotze you are such a successful person. I know that people really like getting a window into some of the things that you’ve done to be a success and adopting those principles will help them, as well.
Dr. Hotze: Let me tell you what. I appreciate your comments and all that. I sure wish I followed this as well as I know how to do it, but sometimes you’re let down. You’ve got to go back. Just practice the fundamentals of being successful and really being successful, I’ve said to be successful really, it’s not just material success. You’ve got to be spiritually successful.
Stacey Bandfield: That’s right.
Dr. Hotze: You want to be successful in your relationships with your spouse, with your children. You want to be successful in your relationship with God. You want to have a good relationship with God and as a Christian through Christ, that’s the way we have that relationship. You want to be able to spend time in the Word, reading the Bible and learning. Listening. Spend time with your bride.
Take her out on dates. Continue to build that relationship. Spend time with your kids, your family and your friends so you have a full, rich life. That’s what success really is. It’s not the material things that we have, because they’re all going to perish. It’s what really lasts, what lasts for eternity. You have to think, “What’s really going to last long-term for eternity?”
Then give yourself towards those things. We know that there are two things, I know, that last for eternity. The souls of individuals and God’s Word. If you invest yourself in those two things and help other people be successful in their lives, then you’re going to find out that you’re going to have a very full, rich, enjoyable life.
