Low Testosterone Increases Risk for Heart Disease

Protect Your Heart with This Hormone

Men, are you worried about heart disease? Your doctor may have told you to eat a healthy diet and watch your cholesterol and blood pressure, but there’s an important factor that is often overlooked by conventional doctors: a testosterone deficiency.

Did you know that optimal testosterone levels are protective of heart disease? Testosterone levels naturally decline as men age, and as a result, they experience many negative health symptoms.  Left untreated, low testosterone levels can lead to serious health problems such as heart disease.

Low Testosterone Increases Risk for Heart Disease

Testosterone replacement therapy has a beneficial anti-ischaemic effect, along with beneficial effects on lipids, glucose metabolism, inflammatory cytokine profiles, lean body mass, blood clotting profiles and patient well-being. It has now been demonstrated in several large longitudinal cohort studies of men with and without coronary disease that low baseline testosterone is a significant risk marker of increased all-cause and cardiovascular mortality. (1)

Low testosterone is associated with raised fibrinogen and hypercoagulable states, promoting atherosclerosis and atherosclerotic plaque instability and thus acute coronary syndromes. Studies in male animals have shown accelerated atherosclerosis after castration – an effect that is resolved by testosterone replacement therapy. (1)

Furthermore, accelerated coronary artery disease has been demonstrated in patients treated with testosterone-suppressive therapy. In a study of over seventy thousand men treated with androgen suppressive therapy for prostate cancer, there was a 44% increase in the risk of developing diabetes and 16% increase in the risk of cardiovascular death or myocardial infarction (heart attack), effects which were evident as early as 1–4 months. Testosterone Helps to Prevent Heart Attacks

  • Testosterone protects the heart and arteries, and decreases risk of heart disease.
  • Testosterone lowers blood pressure by dilating the arteries, including the aorta and coronary arteries of the heart.
  • Men with arteriosclerosis generally have low testosterone levels.
  • Studies indicate that taking natural testosterone can help reverse arteriosclerosis.
  • Testosterone can also counter high cholesterol and angina.
Take a look at other research studies that show the benefit of testosterone on the heart:

Risk of Myocardial Infarction (MI) in Older Men Receiving Testosterone Therapy
Conclusion: Older men who were treated with intramuscular testosterone did not appear to have an increased risk of MI (heart attack). For men with high MI risk, testosterone use was modestly protective against MI.

No Consistent Evidence of an Increased Risk of Heart Problems with Testosterone Medicines
Conclusion:  A regulatory body representing European Union member states has agreed by consensus that there is no consistent evidence of an increased risk for cardiac problems in men who receive testosterone products to treat hypogonadism.

Acute Anti-Ischemic Effect of Testosterone in Men With Coronary Artery Disease
Conclusion: Short-term administration of testosterone induces a beneficial effect on exercise-induced myocardial ischemia in men with coronary artery disease. This effect may be related to a direct coronary-relaxing effect.

Acute Hemodynamic Effects of Testosterone in Men with Chronic Heart Failure
Conclusion: Administration of testosterone increases cardiac output acutely, apparently via reduction of left ventricular afterload.
